How to Hire a Web Designer/Developer

  • Marketing, Strategy

If you own a business, even a small one and you don’t yet have a website, you’re losing a lot of money each and every day that you’re open. With so many potential customers choosing to visit a website before they do anything else, it is a must to have a well-maintained, eye-catching website for customers and potential customers alike to enjoy.

Who Can Develop a Website?

When you’re looking for website developers, they’ll have one of three titles:

  • Developer/coder
  • Graphic designer
  • Website designer

Of these three, a website designer will likely do you the most good. This is because graphic designers are more concerned with the graphics of your site than anything else and they usually won’t do any type of coding that you need done. By the same token, developers can build a great website but aren’t always that great with the actual design of that site. A web designer will do everything that you need them to do but this option will likely cost you more money as well.

This doesn’t mean that the other two professionals will provide you with substandard work. All three developers will do a good job. Just make sure that they can do what you need them to do before you hire them, especially if you aren’t experienced with all of the areas of designing a website yourself.

What this means is that you have to know exactly what you want this person to do before you rush out and hire someone. And be specific because otherwise you may hire someone who doesn’t have the expertise you need to take care of that particular task.

Many of these professionals are freelancers but this is a good thing because it usually means that they have little overhead and therefore reasonable prices for their services.

Look for the Right Skills

When you’re interviewing prospective developers for your website design needs, you should first make sure that they have the technical skills they need to do the job right. These include, but aren’t limited to, the following:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop (or another image editor)
  • CSS/CSS3
  • HTML/HTML5
  • JavaScript (a bonus and a must for using drag-and-drop site builders)
  • jQuery (this is especially important if you aren’t using a drag-and-drop website builder)
  • PHP (if you’re using WordPress)

If your prospective designer isn’t familiar with the right software, move onto someone else. If they know more than these programs, that’s an extra perk for you. And in addition to technical skills, there are other things to look for. For instance, how quickly do they get back with you when you leave them a message? Does that person have a good understanding of the job you need done? How much experience does the designer have? Finally, make sure that you get samples of their work, which is simple if they are a legitimate developer.

Finally, if you have no idea how to price the job, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you’re on a budget, you may want to let the freelancer know how much you are planning to pay for the job instead of accepting a price from that person. If you’re flexible when it comes to your budget, you can go ahead and get three bids from three different designers so you can accept the best one in the end. Remember that this job is not going to be cheap but it won’t be as steep as you might think.

What About Designing a Website Yourself?

By now, you might be thinking that all of this sounds too complicated and expensive, and you might be considering designing your website yourself or at least in-house. However, in most cases, letting the pros design your website for you will save you both time and money in the long run, not to mention one heck of a lot of stress.

Businesspeople are busy people, and you have to remember that this job doesn’t just involve developing the site. It also involves keeping that site up to date on a regular basis and it is very likely that you won’t have the time to do this. In fact, you may not even have the ability to do this so the pros take care of everything related to the upkeep of your website.

If you’re curious about some of the other benefits of trusting the experts to design your website instead of doing it yourself, here they are:

  • You will get a much more professional-looking website in the end. Even with drag-and-drop capabilities, it is usually very difficult to get a fantastic-looking site when you’re designing it yourself.
  • Your website will produce much better results and lure in more customers than if you did the site yourself. Professional developers know just what to do to create copy and graphics that get their attention.
  • Developers know all about search engine optimization (SEO) and keywords. In other words, they’ll make sure that more people will find your business when they search for your product or service on the Internet.
  • Your site will be much more secure and safe. Not only will the data on your site be more secure but the site itself will be protected from hackers. The experience that professional developers have will keep your website very safe.

As you can see, there are tons of advantages when you decide to hire someone who’s a professional when it comes to web development for businesses. It saves you time, money, stress, and headaches; plus, it does this and more without breaking the bank.

Things to Consider When You Need a Website

If you’re curious about the costs associated with hiring a professional to develop your website, just know that there are too many things to take into consideration to quote an “average” price here. It might cost you several hundred dollars or ten thousand; it all depends on how much information you want on the website. There are many factors, including whether or not you want an e-commerce site, how big your business is, how many functions you want on the site.

Do not worry, though, because professional developers will quote you a price or at least an estimate before starting their work and you’ll be able to get some idea of what your own site is going to cost you at that point. When you compare the costs associated with a professional website to the costs (in both money and time) of doing it yourself, there’s really no comparison. In business, it takes money to make money, so you might as well spend the money necessary and let the experts create your website for you. In the end, you will never regret the decision.

Conclusion

If you need a website for your business, time is of the essence. Every day that your website is just an idea in your head and not a reality is going to cost you a lot of money, not to mention a lot of customers. The costs are reasonable once you consider what you get in return. Once your site is up and running and you discover all of the amazing results it brings, you’ll likely wonder how you ever survived without the site up to now.
